The Kenya Navy Deputy Commander Brigadier William Kombe on Friday 17 January 2020, presided over a medal award ceremony for the Africa Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) maritime component personnel recognizing their exemplary work during their tour of duty at the Kenya Navy Fleet Mkunguni.

The maritime component comprising of Kenya Navy Ships (Umoja and Shupavu), a Tasking Unit and the Special Boats Unit took over AMISOM 8 duties on December 2018.

The Tasking Unit is responsible for administrative issues while the Special Boats Unit is deployed in the Port of Kismayu to ensure the security of the port since its capture by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) from the hands of the Al Shabaab in 2011.

Brigadier Kombe congratulated the AMISOM 8 maritime component personnel for their contribution towards a peaceful Somalia, especially in the Southern sector that previously was a safe haven for the Al Shabaab.

“I am grateful to receive all onboard Kenya Navy Fleet without incurring a single casualty in the line of duty for the last one year. The medals received are a sign of great achievement and recognition of the self-sacrifice to the people of Kenya and Somalia at large,” he said.

The Kenya Navy Deputy Commander challenged the troops to utilize the vast knowledge acquired on board the ships and boats in their subsequent deployments after their tour of duty.

The AMISOM 8 maritime component contingent passed the mantle onto their AMISOM 9 counterparts.
